A Brief Guide To Shower Caulking

Shower caulking serves the important purpose of protecting the structure of your home. If the caulking is damaged then water will splash and run in between the tiles in your shower. This is a big problem because it can cause serious water damage to your wall and floor structure. If the problem is left unaddressed then damage can be quite costly to repair. This can also lead to the growth of mildew. Mould and mildew are very dangerous because they can actually affect the health of those living in the house.

If you do notice that the shower caulking or grout between the tiles is damaged then you need to repair it or replace it. This is a relatively easy task but it will take quite a lot of time and effort. The first step would be to thoroughly clean the shower tile. You need to ensure that all soapy residues and soap scum is cleaned away. You should then rinse all of the tiles thoroughly with water and dry them. Once the area is clean and dry, you can begin removing the old caulk or grout.

The next step would be to clear all the debris out of the shower area. You then need to clean the spaces between the tiles where you have removed the old caulking or grout. You would use denatured alcohol for this as this would not take very long to dry. However, if the caulking was very damaged and has led to the formation of mildew, you will need to address this task first before cleaning the spaces with denatured alcohol. Once the spaces are clean, you need to wait until everything is perfectly dry. If the area is damp then the new shower caulking will not bond properly. Many home owners simply wait until the next day to carry on with the process. You can speed up the drying process by using a hair dryer if you are in a rush.

Once the new caulking is applied and smoothed into the spaces between all the tiles, the shower will be successful sealed.
