The first hand-held phone was demonstrated 1973 by Dr Martin Cooper and weighed 1 kilogram.  The first mobile phone became available in 1983 and was known as the DynaTAC 8000x.  From 1990 mobile phone subscription has increased from 12.4 million to over 5.6 billion.

Mobile phones are generally used for keeping in touch and having immediate access to a telephone should you need emergency assistance.  You will find people who have more than one cell phone.  They might use one for business and the other one for personal use.  Mobile phones are the fastest spreading technology.

The use of mobile phones are prohibit while you are driving a vehicle.  Even though some people still use cell phones while driving it is known to be distracting and therefore increasing the risk of an accident.  Many pupils are known for taking cell phones to school but the use has been restricted as it has been used for cheating in exams and in some cases even harassment and can be distracting to the students.  Many people use their cell phones for banking and making payments.

Should you consider a prepaid cell phone?  Prepaid phones are ideal for people who financially can not afford a contract or if they are only going to need the phone for a short period of time.  Prepaid phones are ideal for students who need to learn responsibility as well as for older people as the prepaid phones are your basic phones and easy to operate.

Once you have used all your prepaid minutes you can simply buy more airtime or if you prefer, or are not able to afford any airtime simply keep the phone allowing you to still receive phone calls.  On the other hand, if you are the type of person who wants the latest technology when it comes to cell phones and are on the phone for long periods of time then a contract might be the better option for you.
